A little history:
I first met Ken Hoover circa 1978, when we worked at The Guitar Shop (Keith Roscoe's place).
On 4/16/96 I played 7 Primeras and this one clearly stood out for its' resonance, balance (not neck-heavy) and tonal balance. There's a Fralin humbucker in the neck position, and a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge. Push/pull pots split coils on one or both pickups. Sperzel locking tuners. Rosewood fingerboard. Quilted maple top, AAAAA mahogany body/neck. Mother of pearl inlay.
Neck dimensions: 1st fret .790; 12th fret .840; 12" radius; 1.70 nut width.
Frets are in very good condition; minimal wear and no dressing is needed at this time.
The guitar is in great playing condition, but cosmetically it shows signs of wear. There are more than a few scratches and marks and a couple of small "chips" (near the bottom edge of top and bottom edges of the binding. I've rated this Primera in "good" condition, given it's age and how much it's been played...it's a beautiful instrument.
I've toured with it here and abroad (Europe, Brasil, Canada, Norway), and had it in my hands at the 2003 Monterey Jazz Festival when I performed on the stage where Hendrix burned his guitar. It's a very versatile instrument, used for a wide variety of music including jazz, blues, roots, funk, fusion, and solo guitar performances.
Time marches on and things change...I now prefer a larger neck profile. I've rarely played the Primera since 2014, and this beautiful instrument should be enjoyed and played, not hung on a wall or stored in a case. I'm not a collector.
If you saw me perform live from 1996-2014, then you've likely seen/heard this guitar. I recorded with it extensively, including the following albums (and more):
Scott Sawyer "Dreamers"; Doll Records 2013 (3 Grammy ballot nominations)
Scott Sawyer "Go There"; Doll Records 2007 (w/ Oteil and Kofi Burbridge)
as a sideman...
Bruce Piephoff "Soft Soap Purrings", Speranza 2014
Keith Waters "Carolina Tracks", 2012
The Meldavians "Farewell Arigemon", 2012
Bruce Piephoff "Still Looking Up at the Stars"; Speranza, 2012
Lois Deloatch "Roots: Jazz, Blues & Spirituals", 2010
Nnenna Freelon "Homefree"; Concord Records, 2010
Lois Deloatch "Closure"; Myriad Publishing Inc., 2005
Nnenna Freelon "Live" (at the Kennedy Center); Concord Records, 2003
Bill Anschell "a different note all together"; Accurate Records, 1998
Bill Anschell & Blowhard: Jazz Player Magazine "play-along" CD, 1997
