About This Listing

I am selling a rare John Juzek 1/2 size cello which was made in Czechoslovakia by the well-known workshop of John Juzek. It most likely dates from the 1950s, but could be as late as the early 1960s. Juzek is one of the best-known manufacturers of student grade instruments, and many of their violins, violas, cellos, and double basses were sold in America, where they were distributed by the Metropolitan Music Company. The serial number "SR l l" painted on the bass side rib of the instrument as well as on the bottom of the instrument indicates that it was used in the New York City public school system. The frighteners on the tailpiece on the tape position, markers on the neck also typical of student instruments. I purchased this cello around twenty years ago. It has been used only as a display - conversation piece. There are dents and scraps on the back and on all the sides of the cello which were probably incurred by the former owner. The front of the cello was sanded down and refinished, again, only the front has been refinished. There is a name, "Penny" carved onto the upper left front side of the cello which was on the cello when I purchased it. When the front was refinished, almost twenty years ago, the name was left to remain as a remembrance of it's age and former owner; also we didn't want to sand down the wood too much. This cello was examined by two luthiers. One in California via photos and one physically examined by a New York City luthier. The NYC luthier let me know that at some unknown point in time the neck was repaired. It was a job well done. He looked for but did not find any other repairs to this cello. He stated that this instrument is in good used condition for its age. The Top is made of Spruce and the Ribs and Back are made of European Maple. It needs a proper setup. A new bridge, sound post, strings and adjustments are necessary for playable condition. The cello does not have a case nor a bow, nevertheless, it is an excellent smaller cello for an advancing student. Juzek Celli offer a nice depth, focus and projecting tonality. This is a very rare piece! This vintage John Juzek cello is sold "as is".
